Joan McCarter, Daily Kos (2018-08-24). Senate Republicans Introduce Sham Bill Pretending to 'Protect' Pre-Existing Condition Coverage. alternet.org This isn't about actually protecting anybody's healthcare | Ten Senate Republicans are trying to fight the obvious. They've introduced legislationthat pretends to reiterate the guarantee—already existing in the law, thanks to the Affordable Care Act—that people with pre-existing conditions can get and keep health insurance. To be clear, this isn't about actually protecting anybody's healthcare. It's about Republicans panicking over the fact that they've terrified voters with the lawsuit—backed by Trump's Justice Department—that would gut those protections. They're pretending like this bill would fix everything, should that challenge to the ACA prevail. But while they're calling their bill the "Ensuring Coverage for Patients with Pre-Existing Conditions Act," it comes up way short of that goal. Kaiser Family Foundation's Larry Levitt points out that while the bill says that people with pre-existing conditions have to be able to get coverage, there's. . .

Frank Stricker (2018-08-23). Is Low Inflation the Path to Real Wage Growth? counterpunch.org History suggests that in recent times even fairly modest rates of inflation often eat up wage increases. The monetary authorities want prices to rise 2 to 3% a year, which is about what prices are doing now. But that means that if you are a worker getting nominal pay increases of 2 to 3%, you are standing still. And 2 to 3% inflation is pretty typical. The main culprit may be energy prices or housing prices, or food prices or health care costs or college tuition or some combination. But a 2 to 3% annual increase in the consumer price index is not uncommon in the last few decades. It means that nominal pay–the fa…

New Poll Shows 70 Percent of Americans Support Medicare for All
Shared by Samantha Borek | truthout.org | 2018-08-24
As its progressive wing and a groundswell of new and energetic candidates continues to move the Democratic Party to the left, a new Reuters poll out Thursday shows that support for a key plank of this insurgency — Medicare for All — has hit an all-time high with 70 percent of all Americans now in favor of a such program, including nearly 85 percent of Democrats and a full 52 percent of Republicans. | With such levels of popularity, as an accompanying article exploring some of the tensions within the party makes clear, Democratic leaders are being told they ignore the push for Medicare for All at their own peril. | pic.twitter.com/6V8G8E35Nb | — Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) August 23, 2018 | Members of Sen.
